About Me

Carolina Bergaz-Crews The only way to paint it is to paint in the present.  I always believe in the last painting I am working on, because it is the sum of what I have been learning; from my experiences, my observation, my physical work, my intuition and my teachers.  I am working to create representational work, paintings that are fresh, timeless and relevant. I have learned from my teachers that imagination has a limit, but you may paint the same vase or teapot for a month, and there is always something new to discover no matter how many times you paint it.  This is why I want to explore the objects and people that are close to me, as I see a hidden beauty in the observation of an “everyday” subject.   I believe that painting what is in front of you is painting the truth.  Flannery O’Connor once said “The longer you look at one object, the more of the world you see in it…” Painting is a way of life, a work of discovery where I learn something new everyday, this is why I do not believe in having a style, because the day that I find my style is the day that I stop painting.  Having found a style would mean I have nothing else new to learn. When I paint it's about the craft of painting, the way the shapes and colors work together and the intensity they emanate when these elements are exactly where they should be in the topographical map of the canvas. I want to create unique art that goes deep inside you and tears your insides and scratches your heart.

I have always known I wanted to be a painter, and since I was a little girl my favorite subject was art. I was always entering art competitions and drawing between classes.  When I finished high school I entered Parsons School of Design's summer program in Paris, where I took drawing classes, which included going out and painting around the city.  I graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts with a Liberal Arts degree and a major in Studio Art in 1999.  At Wheaton, I received the Miriam F. Carpenter Prize in Art as well as the Prize Award "Most successful expression of idea".  After college I worked at Sotheby's for 2 years where I was fortunate to be surrounded by art every day, an experience I will always cherish, as it is not everyday that you live among such important pieces of artwork.  I studied at the Art Students league of New York, from 2005 to 2008 taking classes with Knox Martin - Painting from Life, Composition, Design, Color; and with Mary Beth McKenzie - Painting from Life, Portraiture,Composition, Color.  I continue to take workshop classes with Mary Beth McKenzie at the Silvermine Art School in New Canaan, CT twice a year and have traveled with her class for a workshop in Florence in the spring of 2008. I received a Merit Scholarship in 2006 allowing me to take a full time class for the 2006-2007 year at the Art Students League of New York, and a Merit Scholarship to take a full time class at the National academy of Art for the Spring Semester of 2008.   I was awarded with the Fantasy Fountain Fund Scholarship in 2007, which is a Summer Study Scholarship to paint the landscape in Aix en Provence, France. During the time I was at the Art Students league of New York I was awarded the “red dot” or best in show in the 2007 class exhibition of Knox Martin; and, the “blue dot” which is an honorable mention in the 2008 class exhibition of Mary Beth McKenzie.

I want to thank my husband for his patience and hard work who brings the bread home so I can paint.  I also want to thank my mother for her support and for  the funding of my classes, without her help I would not be living my lifelong dream, to be a painter. I also want to thank my in-laws who have paid for several classes at the Art Students League and my father for his creative Genes.

I was born in Madrid, Spain February of 1976.  I moved with my Mother and 2 brothers to the U.S. where I have lived for 18 Years.  I currently live in Brooklyn with my husband and my dog Pancho and work at a studio in D.U.M.B.O, Brooklyn.
